Cataract Surgery
Cataract Surgery
Procedure Overview
Pre-Surgery Evaluation: An eye examination to measure the size and shape of the eye and determine the most appropriate type of IOL. This may include measurements of the cornea, lens, and overall eye structure.
Preparation: Numbing eye drops are applied to the eye, and sometimes a mild sedative is given to help the patient relax.
Incision: A small incision is made at the edge of the cornea. This can be done with a blade or a laser.
Lens Removal: The cloudy lens is broken into pieces using ultrasound (phacoemulsification) and then removed from the eye.
Lens Implantation: The artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted through the incision and positioned in place of the natural lens.
Incision Closure: The small incision may self-seal, but sometimes a stitch is needed
Recovery
Immediate Post-Surgery: Vision may be blurry initially but typically improves within a few days. Patients may experience mild discomfort, itching, or sensitivity to light.
Follow-Up: Multiple follow-up visits are scheduled to monitor healing. Eye drops are prescribed to prevent infection and reduce inflammation.
Activity Restrictions: Patients are usually advised to avoid strenuous activities, bending over, or heavy lifting for a few weeks.
Benefits
Improved Vision: Significant improvement in clarity and color perception.
Reduced Glare: Many patients notice reduced glare from lights.
Enhanced Quality of Life: Improved ability to perform daily activities without reliance on glasses.
Suitability
Cataract surgery is typically recommended when cataracts interfere significantly with daily activities. It is suitable for most people with cataracts, but a thorough examination is necessary to rule out other eye conditions that might affect the outcome.
Cataract surgery is highly successful and is one of the most frequently performed surgeries worldwide. Consulting with an ophthalmologist will help determine the best approach and timing for the surgery, ensuring optimal results for the patient's specific needs.
